The Los Angeles Valley College Transfer Alliance/Honors Program (TAP) is designed to help first-time college students* transfer to a four-year college or university. TAP students enroll in academically enriched general education courses which emphasize written expression and the critical analysis of ideas. These courses, designated as "Honors Section" on a student's transcript, provide learners with a challenging and stimulating academic environment that aims to mirror the experience of a four-year institution.
On average, 90% of LAVC TAP applicants have been accepted by UCLA over the last five years. Typically less than 25% of non-TAP applicants to UCLA have been admitted to UCLA over this same period. TAP transfers at UCLA also perform better academically than non-TAP transfers and native UCLA students.
In order to be considered for the priority admission described above, TAP students must be certified after completing a minimum of 15 Honors units and Library Science 101; nine of those 15 units must be completed prior to certification.
Additional TAP Benefits Include:
- Priority registration for TAP/Honors sections
- Special Scholarships for TAP students at UCLA, Woodbury University, and at Los Angeles Valley College
- Eligibility for priority consideration for admission to UCLA (College of Letters and Science), UC Irvine, Chapman College, La Sierra University, Loyola Marymount University, Mills College, Occidental College, Pomona College, Pitzer College, and Woodbury University
- Assistance with application for transfer to a four-year college or university
- Increased student-professor contact
- Association with other academically motivated students
- A TAP designated counseling team for specialized advisement
- An official TAP designation on the LAVC transcript
- Access to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) College Library
* First time college students that do not have a college degree. Students who have a Bachelor’s degree or higher from any institution (domestic or international) are able to take TAP/Honors classes, but will not earn TAP certification or TAP completion on their transcripts or priority consideration in the transfer application process.
